SEAS AND RIVERS OF UKRAINE

It is not enough to say that Ukraine is a picturesque country with many rivers and seas. Rivers are the principle part of ukraine’s water resources. Most of them are longer than 100 km. The Dnieper, the Dniester, the Danube, the Southern Buh, the Seversky Donets and the Tysa are the largest rivers. In general ukraine’s rivers belong to the basins of the Black and Azov Seas. Only the Western Buh and some other rivers flow into the Baltic Sea.

Ukraine’s rivers are mostly flat, with winding channels. They flow slowly in wide valleys. Rivers flowing off the Carpathian and Crimean Mountains are narrow, shallow and fast. But in some of the southern regions there are almost no rivers.

Russian rivers, lakes, ponds have an important role in water supply and are used as sources of energy. Navigable rivers are important for transport.

The Dnieper River flows into the Black Sea and it is 2285 km long. It is the third largest river in Europe after the Volga and the Danube.

The Dniester is another large river, it flows along the borders of Ukraine and Moldova into the Black Sea.

The Danube is an important water route linking the country with many European countries.

There are over 3 000 lakes all over Ukraine. We may find them mostly in Polissia, the Black Sea lowlands and the Crimea.

Ukrainian seas are also important. The southern coast of Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Black Sea has a surface area of 422 000 sq. km. Its depth is 2210 m. It has only a few islands in it. It is curious but in the northwest the sea is only 30-60 m deep. It’s important ports are Odessa, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Sevastopil.

The Sea of Azov is not so picturesque as the Black Sea. Nevertheless, it’s wonderful sandy beaches on the northern coast attract visitors and it is very rich in fish life. In winter the Sea of Azov freezes over. It is a small sea, and is the world’s most shallow sea, its average depth is 5-7 m.

So, we can’t note that Ukraine has insufficient water supplies. The scarcest water resources are in southeastern Ukraine, in the area where industry is centreed. There are no local sources of water supply in such large cities as Kharkov, Lvov and Kryvyi Rih. That is why channels have been dug from reservoires of the Dnieper to provide water to the arid regions of the country.
